Alternating chapters from Sunshine and Auri, mother and daughter.Sunshine investigates more of her past while life in the small town in New Mexico is unraveled by Auri, Cruz, and a full cast of characters.I LOVE the humor and snark in this book. The narrator is Lorelei King and she does most of the books by this author.I love this narrator! She does an exquisite job on the timing, the humor and dry wit of all the characters. The voice variance between Sunshine and Auri is so distinctive, it’s hard to remember it’s the same narrator. It’s like listening to a live conversation between the two. I love reading the book but this narrator takes the experience to the next level. I adored this second book in the Sunshine Vicram series.Darynda Jones writes humor that is both smart yet quirky and so far both books in this new series deliver.Much like A Bad Day for Sunshine, there are multiple mysteries happening at the same time. We have the case Sunshine is working on as Sheriff, a mystery Auri has taken an interest in, and the ongoing mystery as to what happened to Sunshine when she was kidnapped as a teenager.As much as I love reading about Sunshine and all the crazy situations she finds herself in, I found myself in the first half of the book anticipating the next scene that would include Levi. Thankfully, after the half way mark, their stories intertwine much more. Their banter and tension is the highlight of the series for me.I was so happy that by the end of the book we finally had some of the answers as to who rescued Sunshine and who Auri’s father was.The book did end on a little bit of a cliffhanger (not in a bad way) and I have decided that the only negative to receiving an advanced reader copy is having to wait that much longer for the next book!I received and advanced reader copy from NetGalley, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
